The Perth Film Society

The Mission of the Perth Film Society (PFS) is to provide the people in and around Perth with the best in the cinematic arts through film nights, pre-movie talks, and educational extras and forums for conversations among film enthusiasts through its internet presence.

Films will be selected for their cinematic excellence, and screenings will be organized in series that feature award-winning directors, actors, and screenplays, or according to genre. There will be classics from directors like Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Francis Ford Coppola, and such actors as Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Meryl Streep, Clark Gable, Henry Fonda and Marlon Brando. There will classics from the various genres: western, horror, mystery, war, adventure, and, of course, love stories. The PFS will invite local experts to give introductions before the start of each movie, and perhaps lead discussions afterwards for those film fanatics out there.

All in all, a PFS film night promises to be a wonderful evening out, and a great opportunity to see many classic films not always available at the video store, and to watch them on the big screen. All film nights will take place at the Myriad Centre for the Arts in the Old Perth Shoe Factory on Sherbrooke St. (the same building as the Factory Grind and PAC), which has an excellent sound system. The Myriad Centre is also wheelchair accessible, and provides cushioned seating, air conditioning, and, of course, popcorn.

PFS memberships are $5 per year and may be purchased at any film night. Members will be put on a mailing list and kept informed of upcoming events. Information on film showings and on the history and art of cinema will also be available through the upcoming PFS blog. Admission is only $5 for members, and popcorn only $2 a bag, making for a fun and inexpensive outing for the whole family.

SPIRITUAL CINEMA CIRCLE

Movies with Heart. Movies with Soul

MAY 30/2010, SUNDAY 2PM

It is a good sign that so many people have mentioned they missed having an April film. Even some store owners asked me for an April poster when I dropped in to shop. This month’s film is, in my humble opinion, so good it will make up for last month’s missed film.

I dedicate our main feature to the memory of my good friend, Eduardo Gomez-Duran, who often came from Ottawa with his wife, Suzanne, to view the films.  He passed on recently much too young.  He had a warm sincerity, a deep wisdom and kind sense of humour.  He passed on so quickly, that I still expect him to appear around the corner with a large smile. Our film explores the nature and possible ways of healing hearts caught in sorrow.

UNCROSS THE STARS

When Troy (Daniel Gillies) loses his beautiful young wife, he follows her enigmatic last request: to drive to the desert and build his Aunt Hilda (Barbara Hershey) a porch, and to "uncross the stars". Once he arrives in Happy Valley, an Arizona retirement community, Troy meets Hilda's friends, a group of bawdy, wisecracking older women, and a Vietnam vet (Ron Perlman) who show him a different outlook on life and death. Troy's journey opens his heart in ways he never imagined possible.
